“The Attitude of Christ”

Last week: One of the themes that Paul was stressing is that we are One in Christ.

Stand together / Not against each other

One spirit

One purpose

Fighting together for the faith

In doing these things, you’re conducting yourselves in a worthy manner of the Good News (V27)

What are the benefits of following Christ

The church must get along

Christ humbled Himself / We must do the same

You must have the attitude of Christ

1. (V1) Paul asks a series of questions

a) What are the benefits of belonging to Christ

Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ?

Any comfort from His love?

Any fellowship together in His Spirit?

Are your hearts tender and compassionate?

b) Paul calls us to get along

The enemy likes to stir it up and cause division inside the church

John 10:10 “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

2. (V5) You Must Have the Attitude of Christ (Selfless, or not thinking of self)

Don’t be selfish

Don’t try to impress others

Be humble

Take interest in others

2.1 (V7) Christ Took On the Humble Position of Slave

What drives the world? Pride, Power, and Money

Jesus is the polar opposite and that is who we are to become like

2.2 (V8) He Humbled Himself in Obedience to God

a) Christ humbled Himself in Obedience

Hebrews 5:8 “Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered.”

John 10:18 “No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”

b) Christ humbled Himself and God exalted Him
